Robbie, a 5 yr old Bichon Frise, was picked up by Animal Control after being abandoned in a Mall parking lot. He had a microchip which was registered to a woman in Las Vegas. Contacted, the woman stated he had been stolen from her two years ago while she vacationed in Florida, but she didn't want him back. When he arrived in rescue, Robbie was hugely obese and terribly matted. He walked into things and appeared blind. So where had he been for the last two years? We'll probably never know. Robbie was taken to the veterinary ophthalmologist and it was discovered that Robbie has PRA - Progressive Retinal Atrophy. He is blind and there is no cure for this condition. Robbie is neutered, up to date on vaccines, has had a heartworm test which is negative. This loving boy wags his tail a lot and puts his head in your lap to be pet. He loves to play with stuffed toys, shaking them, throwing them and playing tug with them. Even though Robbie is blind, he walks briskly on a leash and has been walking 2 miles a day. He gets around well in the house and in a fenced backyard. Robbie is housetrained and likes other dogs, cats and children. He is quite smart and he understands lots of words. He does not like to be left home alone for long periods of time -- he loves being around his family. He is on a thyroid pill twice a day and occasional eye drops. Robbie has lost 5 lbs while in rescue and his measured portions of food and daily walks will help him to continue to lose weight. ADOPTION RESTRICTIONS PLEASE READ Potential adopters must live with 100 miles of Norfolk, VA and must submit a written application (SEE BELOW) We do not adopt to families with children under the age of 8. We do not ship dogs. Bichons require a great deal of love and attention in order to thrive. Because of their extreme people dependence and their inherent housetraining difficulties, we place only in homes where there is an adult home during the day.
