Call 757-204-4898 for more information about this dog. Check our Events page for the next "Meet and Greet" scheduled at the Family Dog Club in Chesapeake, VA for an easy way to meet our Beagles. 1 YEAR OLD FEMALE Cricket was rescued from a high kill shelter in NorthernVirginia on September 4, 2008, along with Hannah Belle, Scooter and Sweet Pea. She has been the victim of neglect, and was taken from her owner. Her nails were so long that they had curved around and grown into her feet. The shelter had to cut her nails off very short, just so she could walk. Cricket is very friendly. When Cricket first arrived, she was quite ill. She feels much better now, though she still walks and runs on her tip-toes. Sep 8 Update: Cricket is HW negative. She is going to be spayed and given her rabies shot on Nov 4. Nov 17 Update: Cricket has been vaccinated for rabies and spayed. We also had the dewclaws on her back legs removed because of the way she walks... so they wouldn't snag on anything. Cricket has been going through various tests, to determine what illness she had when we received her in Sept. Cricket has had 3 mild seizures. She has been fine a few minutes after each seizure, and has not lost control over any bodily functions during any seizure. Cricket has had a number of tests to rule out various tick-borne illnesses such as Lymes disease. She could not be tested for distemper until a certain time frame past her vaccination for distemper, which she received at the end of August. Cricket had several rather unpleasant tests performed on her while she was sedated for her spaying surgery, to include a spinal tap. We are hoping to learn more about her illness on Nov 19th, when she returns to the vet. She is housetrained and well-behaved inside. The tests were inconclusive as to whether Cricket had distemper. As of June, things have settled out for this spunky little girl. She sometimes has seizures. They are mild, and generally controlled with inexpensive medications that she takes with her morning and evening meals. They are usually a couple of months apart (seizures). She has a stiff-legged gait, and doesn't really bend her legs much at all. Nothing stops her from running around, playing tug of war and generally getting into the middle of things at the dog club. Cricket is a great dog.... don't sell her short. Come out and meet her, you'll be glad you did. Nov 30, 2008 Update: Cricket tested negative for distemper. She has had a total of 3 seizures while in our care. The third one was actually while we were at the vet's -- which was actually kind of a good thing since the medical folks were able to observe the seizure. She was placed on phenobarbital, and is due for a re-check about Dec 19th -- to check the levels of the medication in her blood, to fine-tune the dosage level of her meds. She has not had a single seizure since starting this medication. She's well-behaved in the house, and house-trained. Cricket does walk like a little ballerina, and she will probably had to take (inexpensive) meds for life, but she's a sparky little dog who needs some love.
